Mark 4:35-40 NIV

35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”


When did Jesus rest?

  1. When He needed to get ready for something big.

Luke 4:1-2 NIV
“Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.”

Luke 4: 14-15 NIV
“14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. 15 He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.”


  1. When he needed to step away from something heavy.

Matthew 14:1-13 NIV
“At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus, 2 and he said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”
3 Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, 4 for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.” 5 Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet.

Then they went and told Jesus.
13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place.”



  1. When he needed to make an important decision.

Luke 6:12-13 NIV
“12 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. 13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles.”

4. When He needed to be with His Father.

“16 But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.”


How do I do this?

  1. Shift your mind towards God

Psalm 100:1-5 NIV
“Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Worship the Lord with gladness;
    come before him with joyful songs.
3 Know that the Lord is God.
    It is he who made us, and we are his[a];     we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving
    and his courts with praise;     give thanks to him and praise his name.
5 For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
    his faithfulness continues through all generations.”


2. Speak your thoughts to God

Philippians 4:6-7 NIV
“6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”


3. Stop letting other voices in

Psalm 62:1 NIV
“Truly my soul finds rest in God;     my salvation comes from him.”

3 things about love…

1. It’s not NEW but its still TRUE


1 John 2:7 “Dear friends, I am not writing a new commandment for you; rather it is an old one you have had FROM THE BEGINNING. This old commandment—to LOVE ONE ANOTHER—is the same message you heard before. 8 YET it is also NEW. Jesus lived the truth of this commandment, and you also are living it”

2. It’s not EASY but it’s SIMPLE.


Love is not a FEELING… Love is a CHOICE.


3. Its not LOVE if it’s not LIVED



I John 3:18 “Dear children let us not love with words or tongue but with action and in truth.”

I Corinthians 13: 4-7 “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”


Luke 19:1-10 NLT “Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.
5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. 7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”
8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four.”

2. Show AFFECTION.

Luke 19:5b “When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “ZACCHEAUS, come down immediately.”

Luke 19:5 “When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home.”


Luke 19: 6-9 “Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy. 7 But the people were displeased. “He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled. 8 Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!” 9 Jesus responded, “Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.”

2 Corinthians 10:3-4 “For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

John 13:2-4 “The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 JESUS KNEW that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.”


THREE WAYS TO COMBAT LIES:


1. RECOGNIZE the lie


Proverbs 4:23 CEV "Carefully guard your thoughts because they are the source of true life."


Proverbs 23:7 "as a man thinks within himself so is he."


2 Corinthians 10:5 "we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ."



2. REJECT the lie


2 Corinthians 10:5 " We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God…

Jeremiah 12:3 ‘Yet you know me, O LORD; you see me and test my thoughts about you. Drag them off like sheep to be butchered! Set them apart for the day of slaughter!’


3. REPLACE the lie with the truth


Philippians 4:7-8
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
