part 4
Luke 7:7

Luke 7:1-10 “When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. 2 There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. 3 The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. 4 When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, 5 because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” 6 So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. 7 That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” 10 Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.

Scripture memory: Luke 7:7 “But say the word and my servant will be healed.”

3 things about the power of God’s word

  1. God’s Word activates my faith.

Romans 10:17
“Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the Word of Christ.”

2. God’s word stimulates my growth.

Acts 20:32 “I commit you to God and to the Word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.”

I Timothy 3:16 “All Scripture is God-breathed, and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

3. God’s Word elevates my mood.

Romans 15:4 “Everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.”

Psalm 19:7-8 “The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul.
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.
The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes”

If I want to tap into the power of God’s word I have to…

  1. Look to it.

Luke 7:1 “When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. 2 There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. 3 The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant.”

I Peter 1:23 “For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.”

2. Submit to it

Luke 7:7 “I am not even worthy to come and meet you. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed. 8 I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, ‘Go,’ and they go, or ‘Come,’ and they come. And if I say to my slaves, ‘Do this,’ they do it.”

1 Thessalonians 2:13 “And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.”

Proverbs 30:5 “Every word of God is flawless.”

Psalm 119:96 “Nothing is perfect except Your word.”

3. Believe in it

Luke 7:9 “When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!”

5101520 Part 3

Psalm 119:105

This Week’s Scripture Memory:
Psalm 119:105 (NLT) “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path”

Psalm 119:130 “Understanding your Word brings light to the minds of ordinary people.”

John 14:26 “Jesus said, ‘The Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.’”

John 16:15 “…The Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.”

Genesis 21:19 “Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.”

Numbers 22:31 “Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with his sword drawn. So he bowed low and fell facedown.
Balaam couldn’t see in the natural what God was doing in the supernatural until God opened his eyes.

Luke 24:31 “Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him…”

How do I allow the Holy Spirit to open my eyes when I am studying His word?

1. I must ask God to open my eyes.

Psalm 119:18 “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your laws.”

James 1:5
“If any of you lack wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt.”

Psalm 32:8 “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.”

2. I must come to God with a humble attitude.

Psalm 25:9 “He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

3. I must acknowledge and turn from sin and conflict.

Matthew 5:8 Jesus said, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”

1 John 2:11 “Whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and he walks around in the darkness. He does not know where he’s going, because the darkness has blinded him.”

4. I must commit in advance to do what God says.

Psalm 119:33-34 “Teach me, O Lord, to follow your decrees; then I will keep them. Give me understanding, and I will keep your law and obey it with all my heart.”

James 1:22 “Do not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves, do what it says.”

Psalm 119:105 “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

5101520 Part 2

Psalm 119:9-10 "How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word.”

verses 10 and 11 “I have tried hard to find you— don’t let me wander from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”

3 Things about temptation

  1. Everyone faces temptation

We are never alone in temptation.

I Corinthians 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind.”

We are never above temptation.

1 Corinthians 10:12 “So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!

2. Temptation is not sin

Hebrews 4:15
“For we do not have a high priest [Jesus] who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.”

3. God has given his word to help fight temptation

Psalm 119:10
“I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”

How do we use God’s word to fight temptation?

  1. Feed on God’s word.

Psalm 119:10 MSG “I’m single-minded in pursuit of you; don’t let me miss the road signs you’ve posted. I’ve banked your promises in the vault of my heart so I won’t sin myself bankrupt.”

What you feed grows and what you starve shrinks.

Galatians 5:17 “For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other.”

Jeremiah 15:16 “When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight.

2. Focus on God’s word

Psalm 1:1-3 “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,
2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who
meditates on his law day and night.
3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.”

3. Follow God’s word

James 1:13 “And remember, when you are being tempted, do not say, “God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong,[c] and he never tempts anyone else. 14 Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away.”

John 15:3
“You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you”

Part 1
Proverbs 7:2-3

Proverbs 7:2-3 "Guard my words as your most precious possession. Write them down, and also keep them within your heart."

4 major benefits to scripture memory.

1. Gives me a WEAPON to fight temptation.

Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

Ephesians 6 tells us that we are not fighting a physical fight but a spiritual fight and that our weapon in this fight is “The sword of the Spirit which is the word of God.”

Psalm 119:9-10 “How can a young person stay pure?  By obeying your word.
10 I have tried hard to find you— don’t let me wander from your commands.11 I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

2. Gives me WISDOM to make good decisions

Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”

3. Gives me a WORD to hold onto when I am down

Romans 15:4 “Everything that was written in the past [he’s talking about the Bible] was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.”

Psalm 1:1-3 (NCV) “Happy are those who don’t listen to the wicked, who don’t go where sinners go, who don’t do what evil people do. They love the Lord’s teachings, and they think about those teachings day and night. They are strong, like a tree planted by a river. The tree produces fruit in season, and its leaves don’t die. Everything they do will succeed.”

Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword.”

Maybe you are feeling…

Anxious:
I Peter 5:7 “Cast all you anxieties on the Lord for he cares for you.”

Sad:
Psalm 147:3 “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

Tired:
Galatians 6:9
“Let us not grow weary in doing good for at the proper time you will reap a harvest if you do not give up.”
Matthew 11:28 “come to me all you who are weary and I will give you rest.”

Frustrated:
Exodus 14:14
“The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm

Hopeless:
Isaiah 40:31 “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.”

4. Helps me WITNESS to unbelievers

1 Peter 3:15
"Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have."

Our vision for this series: Get a hunger for God’s word. Give God’s word to others around the world.
