Good Neighbor: Prepare a place where all are welcome.

Good Neighbor
Part 3
Prepare a Place Where Everyone Is Welcome

1.CARE for those who are hurting

2.DARE to love those who are different

3. PREPARE A PLACE where everyone is welcome.

Luke 10:35 “ The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.”

Romans 15:7 LB “So warmly WELCOME each other into the church, just as Christ has warmly welcomed you; then God will be glorified.”

Romans 12:13 “Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. PRACTICE HOSPITALITY.”

Hebrews 13:2 “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.”

I Peter 4:9 “Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.”

2 reasons…

1. People feel like outsiders

2. We were once outsiders

Romans 15:7-9 “So warmly welcome each other into the church, just AS CHRIST HAS WARMLY WELCOMED YOU; then God will be glorified.

How do we PREPARE a PLACE where ALL ARE WELCOME?

1. INTENTION

2. PREPARATION

Luke 15:23 “Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate.”

3. CONNECTION.

Luke 19:5 “When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.

4. CELEBRATION

Good Neighbor: Part 2

LUKE 10:25-37

25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[c]; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[d]”
28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”
29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[e] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’
36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”
Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

What are some things that keep us from helping other people?

  1. They don’t act like me.
  2. They don’t look like me.
  3. They don’t believe like me.
How do we dare to love our neighbor?

1. Make room for interruptions.

2. Make room for nearness.

Vs. 33
when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 He went to him…

3. Make room for a mess.

John 13:34
A new command I give you: love one another
As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

Good Neighbor: Compassion

Luke 10:25-37
25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” 27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

Psalm 121:1
I lift up my eyes to the mountains - where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

To move we must…

1. Show Mercy

Luke 10: 36-37
36 “Which of these thre do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers? 37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

2. Be Obedient

Matthew 14:13-21
13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” 16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat. 17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. 18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
