Prayer of Jabez

Book of Prayer
Part 1
Prayer of Jabez

1 Chronicles 4:10 “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request.”

Four things that Jabez prayed:

1. Jabez prayed for BLESSING.
1 Chronicles 4:10 “Oh that you would bless me...”

verse 10 “God granted his request”

Genesis 12:2 NLT “I will bless you...and you will be a blessing to others.”

2. Jabez prayed for INFLUENCE.

1 Chronicles 4:10 “Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my territory...”

Ephesians 1:18 “I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints.”

Psalm 2:8Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.”

3. Jabez prayed for PRESENCE.
1 Chronicles 4:10 “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me…”

Exodus 33:15-17 “Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?” And the LORD said to Moses, “I will do the very thing you have asked.”

Acts 11:21The Lord’s hand was with them and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.”

4. Jabez prayed for PROTECTION.
1 Chronicles 4:10 ““Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm.”

1 Peter 5:8 “The devil is like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.”

John 10:10 “The thief comes to steal and kill and destroy, BUT I have come that you might have life and have it to the fullest!

The war against the WE

Me to We
Part 2
The war against the WE

Genesis 1:26 “LET US create man in OUR image”

Four things that are warring against the we:

1. Pride

Proverbs 13:10 NLT “pride leads to arguments.”

Philippians 2:3 “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves…”

2. Selfishness

James 4:1-2 MSG “Where do you think all these appalling wars and quarrels come from? Do you think they just happen? Think again. They come about because you want your own way, and fight for it deep inside yourselves. You lust for what you don’t have and are willing to kill to get it. You want what isn’t yours and will risk violence to get your hands on it. You wouldn’t think of just asking God for it, would you? And why not? Because you know you’d be asking for what you have no right to. You’re spoiled children, each wanting your own way.”

3. Anger

Proverbs 29:22 NLT “An angry person starts fights; a hot-tempered person commits all kinds of sin.”

4. Wrong focus

Titus 3:9 “But stay away from those who have foolish arguments and talk about useless family histories and argue and quarrel about the law. Those things are worth nothing and will not help anyone.”

1 Timothy 2:23-24 “Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments because you know they produce quarrels and the Lord’s servant must not quarrel. Instead he must be kind to everyone…”

I Corinthians 1:10 NLT “I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose.

Three things about unity:

1. Unity is POWERFUL

Genesis 11:6 “The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.”

Psalm 133:1-3 “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! 2 It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down on the collar of his robe. 3 It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.”

2. Unity must be PROTECTED

John 17:23 NLT “I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.

Ephesians 4:2 “make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

3. Unity is found in aligning under God’s PURPOSES.

Ephesians 4:15-16 NCV “Speaking the truth with love, we will grow up in every way into Christ, who is the head. 16 The whole body depends on Christ, and all the parts of the body are joined and held together. Each part does its own work to make the whole body grow and be strong with love.”

The why behind the WE

The why behind the WE

Ecclesiastes 4:8-12 “There was a man all alone;
he had neither son nor brother.
There was no end to his toil,
yet his eyes were not content with his wealth.
“For whom am I toiling,” he asked,
“and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?”
This too is meaningless—
    a miserable business!
9 Two are better than one,

because they have a good return for their labor:
10 If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.
11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
12 Though one may be overpowered,
    two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

Four reasons that WE is better than ME:

  1. WE has greater POTENTIAL than ME

verse 9
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor”

Genesis 2:18 “It is not good for man to be alone…”

verse 18b “I will create a helper suitable for him.”

Genesis 1:28 “Then God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it.”

2. WE has greater PURPOSE than ME

verse 8 “There was a man all alone;
he had neither son nor brother.
There was no end to his toil,
yet his eyes were not content with his wealth.
“For whom am I toiling,” he asked,
“and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?”
This too is
meaningless

Ephesians 2:10WE are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good works with God prepared in advance for US to do”

Romans 12:5 MSG “Each of us finds our meaning and function as a part of Christ’s body. But as a chopped off finger or a cut off toe we wouldn’t amount to much, would we?”
3. WE brings a greater PLEASURE than ME

verse 8 he says this alone stuff is “a miserable business”

Eccles 3:1-8 “There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:
a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and
a time to laugh…”

Zechariah 8:4-5 MSG
“Old men and old women will come back to Jerusalem, sit on benches on the streets and spin tales, move around safely with their canes—a good city to grow old in. And boys and girls will fill the public parks, laughing and playing—a good city to grow up in.”

4. WE has a greater POWER than ME

verse 12
“a chord of three strand”

verse 8 “For whom am I toiling,” he asked,
“and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?”
This too is meaningless—
    a miserable business!

Move onto a Team

Pack your Bags
Part 4:
Move onto a team

Exodus 6:6-8 “Therefore, say to the Israelites: “I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. And I will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord.’”

God wants to move us out of our past

God wants to move us into our calling

God wants to move us onto His team

verse 7b “I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God”

Philippians 2:1-2 NLT “Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? 2 Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one heart and purpose.

Four words that relate to being on a team:

1. Working

verse 2 “Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one heart and purpose.”

Ephesians 2:10 “We are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good WORKS…”

2. Together

verse 2 “…working together with one heart and purpose.”

1 Corinthians 3:9 NLT “We work together as partners who belong to God.”

Romans 12:5 MSG “Each of us finds our meaning and function as a part of Christ’s body. But as a chopped-off finger or a cut-off toe we wouldn’t amount to much, would we?”

Ecclesiastes 4 “two are better than one because they have a good return for their work…”

3. Heart

verse 2 says “working together with one heart.”

Philippians 2:3-4 “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.”

4. Purpose
