Come To Worship Part 5

Come to Worship
Part 5
Worship is Our Identity

Galatians 4:6-7 “And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.”

1. We are _SONS__not____SERVANTS__.

John 15:15 “I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me.”

Romans 6:18 “Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become servants to righteous living.”

2. We become what _YOU THINK GOD THINKS YOU ARE .

You are not what you think you are
You are not what others think you are
You become what you think the most important person in your life thinks you are. John Maxwell

Genesis 1:26-27 “Then God said, “Let us make human beings[b] in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth,[c] and the small animals that scurry along the ground.”So God created human beings in his own image.”

1 John 4:8-10 “But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.

1 John 4:18 “Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.”

3. Satan knows your____NAME____ and calls you by your ___SIN_____, God knows your____SIN______ and calls you by your_____NAME________.

Luke 15:11-32

Come to Worship
Part 4
Worship is Pleasing Someone

Matthew 2:1-2 “Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem in Judea during the time when Herod was king. When Jesus was born, some wise men from the east came to Jerusalem. 2 They asked, “Where is the baby who was born to be the king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.”

Worship is…

Doing something
Giving something
Pleasing someone

We please God when we…

1. Follow his lead.

Matthew 2:9 “After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was…”

Isaiah 9:6 “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor…”

Ps 23:3 (NLT) “He guides me along right paths…”

Ps 16:11 “You will show me the way of life.”

Hebrews 4:14-16 NCV “Since we have a great high priest, Jesus the Son of God, who has gone into heaven, let us hold on to the faith we have. 15 For our high priest is able to understand our weaknesses. He was tempted in every way that we are, but he did not sin. 16 Let us, then, feel very sure that we can come before God’s throne where there is grace. There we can receive mercy and grace to help us when we need it.”

Matthew 11:28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

2. Express our love.

Matthew 2:10 “When they saw the star they were overjoyed.”

The problem with some Christians today is they are underjoyed.

3. Surrender our lives.

Matthew 2:10 “On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.”

Romans 6:13 (NLT) "Give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God."

Romans 12:1-2 NCV "So brothers and sisters, since God has shown us great mercy, I beg you to offer your lives as a living sacrifice to him. Your offering must be only for God and pleasing to him, which is the spiritual way for you to worship."

Luke 6:46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?…”

Matthew 2:12 “And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.”

Part 2
Do Something

Matthew 2:1-2 “Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem in Judea during the time when Herod was king. When Jesus was born, some wise men from the east came to Jerusalem. 2 They asked, “Where is the baby who was born to be the king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.”

1. What do we do?

3 main ways that we worship God in corporate worship settings.

  1. We worship God with our mouth

Psalm 109:30 NIRV “With my mouth I will continually praise the Lord. I will praise him when all his people gather for worship.”

  1. Speaking

Psalm 34:1 NLT “I will praise the Lord at all times. I will constantly speak his praises.”

2. Shouting
Psalm 27:6 "Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround
me; at his tabernacle will I sacrifice with
shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the Lord."

3. Singing

Psalm 47:6
"Sing praises to God, sing praises to our King, sing praises."

James 3:7-12 “All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.”
b. We worship God with our posture.

  1. Bowing or Kneeling

Psalm 95:6
says, "Come let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker."

2. Standing

Psalm 119:120
"My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws."

3. Dancing

Psalm 149:3
"Let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with tambourine and harp."

c. We worship God with our Hands

  1. Playing Instruments

Psalm 33:2
"Praise the Lord with the harp; make music to him on the ten stringed lyre. Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy."

2. Clapping

Psalm 47:1
"Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy."

3. Lifting Hands

Psalm 63:4
"I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands."
Psalm 134:2Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and praise the Lord”
Lamentations 3:41 “Let us lift up our hearts and hands to God in heaven.”
I Timothy 2:8 “I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands in prayer.”

2. Why do we do it?

a. Because God asked for it.

Matthew 22:37-38
“Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment.

Philippians 2:10-11 “At the name of Jesus every knee will bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord.”

b. Because God deserves it.

Romans 12:1 NLT “ And so, dear brothers and sisters,[a] I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.”

c. Because it’s my job
1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”

Revelations 5:13 “And then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea. They sang: “Blessing and honor and glory and power belong to the one sitting on the throne  and to the Lamb forever and ever.”

Isaiah 61:3 TLB “For God has planted them like strong and graceful oaks for his own glory.”

John 4:23 “But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way.”

3 things about worship

  1. Worship is doing something.

Verse 2 “They Came to worship”. They left where they were and they came to Jesus.

James 4:8 “Come near to God and he will come near to you.”

2. Worship is giving something.

Matthew 2:11 “On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.”
Check this out. A part of their worship was that they gave something, and not just something but something of great value.

2 Samuel 24:24 “I will not sacrifice to the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”

Romans 12:1 “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God--this is your true and proper worship.”

3. Worship is pleasing someone.

Revelations 4:11 “You (God) created everything, and it is for Your pleasure that they exist and were created.”

verse 7 “Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”

verse 13 “When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”

Psalm 51:16-17 NCV “You are not pleased by sacrifices, or I would give them.
    You don’t want burnt offerings.
The sacrifice God wants is a broken spirit.
God, you will not reject a heart that is broken and sorry for sin.”

Hosea 6:6 LB “I don’t want your sacrifices—I want your love; I don’t want your offerings—I want you to know me.”
