Legendary- Abraham

Legendary
Part 3
Abraham

Hebrews 11:8 “By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.

Bottom Line: To step into your destiny you will have to step away from your security

Genesis 12:1-4 “The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you.  I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others.  I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.” So Abram departed as the Lord had instructed…”

3 things about faith.

1. Faith requires us to listen up

verse 1 “the Lord had said to Abram…”

Jesus said
John 10:27 “My sheep know my voice..”

2. Faith requires us to leave behind

verse 1b “leave your country, your people, your father’s household.”

Genesis 12:1 “The Lord told Abram leave your home and your country and your people.”

Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”

You can have faith or you can have control, but you can’t have both.

Hebrews 11:8 “It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going”

3. Faith requires us to look ahead

verse 2 “I will make you a great nation

Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”

Hebrews 11:8 “By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.”

Mark 6:6 “He was amazed at their lack of faith.”

Luke 7:9 “When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.”

Legendary- Noah- Vision Sunday

The GOAT:
Part 2
Noah
Vision Sunday

Hebrews 11:7 “By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.

Bottom Line: One person can make a difference.

1. You can make a difference for your family

verse 7 “By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family…”

2. You can make a difference for the future

Genesis 9:7 “As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.”

5 things… If you are going to make a difference…

  1. You can’t be afraid to stand out

In order to make a difference you have to be different

2. You can’t be afraid to work hard

Making a difference is HARD WORK!

3. You can’t be afraid of being uncomfortable

Theodore Roosevelt “Never throughout history has a man who lived a life of ease left a name worth remembering.”

4. You can’t be afraid to take a risk

Hebrews 11:6 “Without faith it is impossible to please God.”

5. You can’t be afraid to stay the course.

Galatians 6:9 “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

The GOAT

Philippians 2:9-11 (NCV) “God made his name greater than any other name…”

  1. No one ever spoke like Jesus.

John 7:46 NCV “The words he says are greater than the words of any other person who has ever spoken!”

a. He claimed to be God

John 10:30 “I and the Father are one.”

b. He claimed to be the only way to God.

John 14:6 ”I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me"

c. He claimed to be able to give eternal life

John 10:27 ”My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand"

d. He claimed to have power over death

John 11:25 ”I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live”

The Resurrection means that
Jesus didn’t just say this stuff, he did it.

2. No one ever served like Jesus

Philippians 2:6-7 NCV “Christ himself was like God in everything. But he did not think that being equal with God was something to be used for his own benefit. 7  But he gave up his place with God and made himself nothing. He was born as a man and became like a servant.”

3. No one ever loved like Jesus

Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates His love for us in this: While we were still sinners Christ died for us.”

John 15:13 “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”

The greatness of Jesus means 3 things:

1. I can have healing from my past.

Isaiah 53:3-5 (CEV) He was hated and rejected; his life was filled with sorrow and terrible suffering.  No one wanted to look at him. We despised him and said, "He is a nobody!"
4He suffered and endured great pain for us,  but we thought his suffering  was punishment from God. 5He was wounded and crushed because of our sins; by taking our punishment, he made us completely well."

Colossians 1:19 (MSG) " but all the broken and dislocated pieces of the universe—people and things, animals and atoms—get properly fixed and fit together in vibrant harmonies, all because of his death, his blood that poured down from the cross.

2. I can have help for my present.

Ephesians 1:19-20 (NLT) " I … pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power 20 that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms"

3. I can have hope for my future.

Matthew 12:21 “In Him (Jesus) the nations will put their hope.”

Colossians 1:27 “Christ in you the Hope of Glory”

Hard Love- James 5:13-18

Hard Love
Part 4
James 3:1-12

James 3:1-2 “Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. 2 We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.

3 things in this passage about the power of the tongue.

  1. The tongue has the power to direct where I go.
verse 3 “when we put bits into the mouths of horses we can turn the whole animal…”

verse 4 “Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.”

2. The tongue has the power to destroy what I have.

verse 5-6
“Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.”

Proverbs 15:4 MSG “Kind words help and heal, cutting words wound and maim.”

3. The tongue has the power to display who I am.

verse 9-10 “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.”

verse 11-12 “Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.”

Matthew 12:34 “For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.”

How do we control our tongue? In James 1:19 we find 4 tips.

James 1:19 “ My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,

  1. Open your ears.

James 1:19 “everyone should be quick to listen.”

2. Use your brain

verse 19 “be slow to speak”

THINK before you speak!

3. Close your mouth

Proverbs 10:19 “When words are many sin is not absent but he who holds his tongue is wise.”

Psalm 39:1 “I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth…”

4. Speak your heart

Ephesians 4:29 “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

Hebrews 3:13 "See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today.
